Recessed lighting is one of the most popular upgrades we do for homeowners. Recessed lights are installed in the ceiling and sit flush with the surface. They provide clean, even light without bulky fixtures hanging down. They work in almost any room and complement any style of decor.

In kitchens, recessed lights provide bright task lighting for cooking and food preparation. They can be placed over countertops, islands, and sinks. When we install recessed lights, we use IC-rated housings. IC stands for insulation contact. These housings can be safely covered with insulation without creating a fire risk. This is important because many attics have loose or batt insulation that will be in direct contact with the light housings. Non-IC rated lights need clearance around them and cannot be covered.

We also install dimmer switches with recessed lights. Dimmers let you adjust the brightness to suit different activities and moods. Bright light for cooking and cleaning. Soft light for relaxing and watching television. Dimmers also save energy and extend the life of your bulbs. We use dimmers that are compatible with LED bulbs, which are the standard for recessed lighting today.

One question we hear often is how many recessed lights are needed in a room. The answer depends on the size of the room, the ceiling height, and the amount of light you want. A general rule is to space recessed lights about four to six feet apart for general lighting. For task lighting over a kitchen island or counter, the lights should be closer together and positioned directly over the work area.
