Many insurance companies will not insure a home with knob-and-tube wiring.

Homes built between the 1960s and 1980s may have aluminum wiring. Aluminum was used as a cheaper alternative to copper, but it has been linked to fire risks. The connections can loosen over time and cause overheating. If your home has aluminum wiring, you may need to have it repaired or replaced. There are special connectors and techniques that can make aluminum wiring safe, but in some cases, full rewiring is the best option.

These are safer and more reliable than battery-operated detectors because you never have to worry about dead batteries.
